 pp. 444

Period full tree-calf leather binding, smooth spine ornately gilt stamped into 4 compartments, geometrical patterns, elaborate scroll and floral devices within the compartments. Engraved frontis of 20 important men to the era, including a coin-sized portrait of George Washington.

One of the nicest examples of this style of American book binding we have seen in a while.

The spine gilt remains exceptionally bright and clean, unlike the vast majority of similar era-style publishers bindings seen by me over many years. I formed a personal collection of well over 250 of these most pleasing early American ornately stamped bindings and this example was almost without question one of, if not the, brightest and most eye-appealing of them all. The book almost seems to retain some of the original surface luster and displays a beautiful patina. Any American coin of this date which remained in this fresh and pleasing a state of preservation would likely be widely considered a condition gem rarity.

In Good+ to near VG completely acceptable condition. Binding is lightly rubbed and age worn, small normal surface flaws which are not severe nor offensive.

Text block with some moderate to at times scattered foxing throughout. This is almost entirely an environmental degradation as opposed to being the result of abuse or mishandling. Overall the book remains clean, tight, square & sound. An attractive and appealing old book.

A picture is worth a thousand words. Please examine pictures closely, as what you see is what we will send you.

[note: we grade conservatively and always seek to disclose any noteworthy flaws.].

Overall sound and despite any flaws, still a beautiful old book well worthy of ownership for any collection and/ or display.

We've done our best to photograph the book so you can see the condition and we've tried to mention any flaws or issues.
